Khayelitsha, Cape Town, South Africa – July 18, 2024 –
Today, on International Mandela Day, the Coalition of African Animal Welfare Organisations (CAAWO) is spreading the message of kindness and compassion through a special animal story time event for a daycare school in Khayelitsha. The event, held in honour of Nelson Mandela’s lifelong commitment to service, will see CAAWO members reading engaging animal stories to young children for 67 minutes – a symbolic tribute to Mandela’s 67 years of imprisonment.
This heartwarming event aims to:
- Inspire a love for animals in young children, fostering empathy and respect for all living beings.
- Promote literacy through engaging storytelling, sparking a love of reading.
- Celebrate International Mandela Day by upholding Mandela’s values of service and community building.
“We are thrilled to celebrate International Mandela Day with this special event,” says Tozie Zokufa, Executive Director at CAAWO. “By reading animal stories to young children, we hope to instil in them a sense of compassion and responsibility towards animals, values that Nelson Mandela himself embodied.” The event takes place in Khayelitsha, a township in Cape Town, reflecting CAAWO’s commitment to reaching underserved communities and promoting animal welfare across Africa.
