Legal Victories & Challenges to Protect Farm Animals around the World

For the World Animal Day on 4 Oct 2024, this High-Level Experts Panel of brilliant WAJ Experts will address a core subject: the Legal Protection of Farm Animals. This online event is hosted by WAJ Founding Director Sabine BRELS aims to explore major Legal Victories & Challenges to Protect Farm Animals around the World. The law cases that will be addressed by the speakers on farm animals cover: Europe, North America, Australia, Africa and India.

– OCTOPUS FARMING BANS
Giulia Malerbi, Head of Global Policy at Aquatic Life Institute, will dive into the emerging industry of octopus farming, assessing its legal, ethical, and environmental implications, and advocate for a global ban based on the sentience and welfare concerns of octopuses, as well as gaps in current regulations.

– LIVE EXPORT BAN IN AUSTRALIA
Roslyn Wells, Former Director of Public Affairs for the Animal Justice Party in Australia, will address the process and strategy behind the adoption of the bill banning the live sheep trade by sea from Australia, successfully passed on 1st July 2024, despite the opposition from the live export industry and set to take effect in May 2028.

– ANIMAL LAW & VEGANISM FOR ANIMAL PROTECTION
Nancy Makuvise, Animal law advocate in Zimbabwe, will explore how animal law and veganism can mutually reinforce each other to advance animal justice, promote legal reforms, and support a more compassionate and sustainable food culture.

– POLICY RESEARCH FOR FARMED ANIMALS IN INDIA
APOORVA, Founding Director of the Animal Law & Policy Network (ALPN), will address the limited India-specific research on animal welfare and explain how the ALPN aims to support the farmed animal advocacy movement in India through evidence-based research.
Panelists’ presentations in the first hour will be followed the second hour by a discussion between experts and then with the audience
