Today, June 5, 2026, marks World Environment Day. This year, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has rallied the globe around an urgent focus on climate change, under the powerful theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” As the global community looks to the official observance in Baku, Azerbaijan, and unites under the campaign hashtag #NowForClimate, we at the Coalition of African Animal Welfare Organisations (CAAWO) are reflecting on a vital truth: we cannot solve the climate crisis without transforming how we treat animals.

Across Africa, the warning signs from our planet are impossible to ignore. We are witnessing shifting rainfall patterns, intense heatwaves, and unprecedented droughts. These environmental shifts do not occur in a vacuum. They directly affect millions of sentient beings—from the wildlife roaming our national parks to the working animals and livestock supporting rural communities.

The Intersecting Crises: Climate, Habitat, and Animal Welfare

When ecosystems degrade, animals are the first to suffer. Severe droughts leave wildlife and farm animals destitute, stripped of food and water. Meanwhile, habitat loss forces wild animals into closer contact with human settlements, exacerbating human-wildlife conflict.

But animals are not just victims of climate change; our global food and agricultural systems are major drivers of it. The expansion of intensive animal agriculture significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and biodiversity loss. If we are truly to be “Inspired by Nature,” we must recognise that nature operates in perfect harmony—a harmony that industrial farming disrupts.

Shifting Towards Sustainable Food Systems in Africa

To secure our future, Africa must lead the way in building compassionate, resilient, and sustainable food systems. This means:

Moving away from intensive confinement: Shifting towards agro-ecological and humane farming practices that respect animal welfare and protect local biodiversity.

Embracing plant-based and sustainable alternatives: Advocating for food policy shifts that reduce our reliance on resource-intensive animal protein, easing the burden on our land and water systems.

Protecting natural ecosystems: Restoring degraded lands so that wild species can thrive in their natural habitats without the threat of displacement.

Climate action is not just about reducing carbon emissions; it is about restoring our relationship with the natural world and all living creatures within it.

Take Action with CAAWO Today

True environmental stewardship requires collective action. Here is how you can step in #NowForClimate:

Rethink Your Plate: Support sustainable food systems by incorporating more plant-based meals into your diet.

Support Humane Agriculture: Choose to support local, small-scale farmers who prioritise high standards of animal welfare and eco-friendly practices.

Advocate for Policy Change: Join us in calling on African governments to integrate animal welfare into national climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.

Let us heed the signals our planet is sending. By protecting animals, we protect our environment and, ultimately, our shared future.
